Kate Hawkins

 

Kate Hawkins (b. 1980 Southampton) is an artist based in London. She is also Creative Director of CommonRoom, an artists’ interiors company that she founded in 2014 after completing her PhD at Winchester School of Art. There she looked at performativity in relation to theatricality and asked how paintings could encourage a more active spectatorship. Before that she studied at Edinburgh University and the Slade School of Fine Art.

 

In 2025 she was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize and in 2026 undertook the Kings Foundation residency at Dumfries House. Previous exhibitions include Bloomberg New Contemporaries (2013), at Spike Island and the ICA; New Order II (2014) at the Saatchi gallery; Painting in Time (2015) the Tetley, Leeds; Painting in Time: Part Two (2016), the Sullivan Galleries, SAIC, Chicago; Idea Home, MIMA, Middlesborough (2017). In recent years Kate has turned her hand to many things including interior design and creative direction. She paints in her spare time.

 

Kate has designed Dressing & Undressing, Lucky Leaf, Best Buds, Ivy Chaplet and the Mochaware collection for CommonRoom.
