Kate Hawkins

Kate Hawkins (b. 1980 Southampton) is an artist based in London. She is also Creative Director of CommonRoom, an artists’ interiors company that she founded in 2014 after completing her PhD at Winchester School of Art. Here she looked at performativity in relation to theatricality and asked how paintings could encourage a more active spectator who was afforded agency as opposed to a passive beholder. Before that she studied at Edinburgh University and the Slade School of Fine Art. In 2013 she exhibited in Bloomberg New Contemporaries, at Spike Island and the ICA and in 2014 New Order II at the Saatchi gallery. More recent exhibitions in include Painting in Time, the Tetley, Leeds, (2015); Painting in Time: Part Two, the Sullivan Galleries, SAIC, Chicago (2016); Idea Home, MIMA, Middlesborough (2017). In recent years Kate has turned her hand to many things including interior design and creative direction. She still paints in any spare time.

Kate has designed Dressing & Undressing, Lucky Leaf, Best Buds, Paper for Peace, and Ivy Chaplet for CommonRoom.
